Title : The Use of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) to Improve The Students’ Ability in Reading Comprehension (An Experimental Study at Second Grade Students of SMPN 1 Banda Aceh)

Keywords : Reading, Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR)
Many students at SMPN 1 Banda Aceh were found to have low performance in reading comprehension because teachers still taught the students with less appropriate techniques for reading comprehension. Therefore, this research was aimed at knowing whether the use of CSR can improve the students’ ability in reading comprehension at the second grade students’ of junior high school or not. This study used quantitative approach through a pre-experimental research by using one group pretest and posttest design. The population of this study is the second grade students at SMPN 1 Banda Aceh, while the sample of this study is VIII-5 class which consists of 25 students selected by using random sampling technique. The result of this study shows that students’ scores increase, after treatment by using CSR. The mean score of pretest is 56.92, and the mean score of posttest is 80.28. Moreover, the result of hypothesis testing indicates that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be seen from the calculation of T-test, 12.76 which is higher than t-table. Hence, CSR can improve students’ reading skill in the aspects of reading. Therefore, the writer suggests that teachers use CSR in teaching reading comprehension.
