Periodontitis kronis merupakan periodontitis yang paling umum terjadi. Etiologi utama periodontitis ialah bakteri Gram negatif anaerob, seperti Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Treponema denticola, Tannarela forsythia dan Porphyromonas gingivalis yang mana secara lokal menginvasi jaringan periodontal sehingga menyebabkan deregulasi neutrofil sebagai salah satu sel imun alami. Neutrofil merupakan karakteristik inflamasi akut, namun juga dapat ditemukan pada inflamasi kronis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kuantitas neutrofil akibat aplikasi ekstrak jahe merah (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) pada tikus putih (Rattus norvegicus) dengan periodontitis kronis. Manipulasi periodontitis kronis pada tikus dilakukan dengan mengaplikasikan wire 0,008 inci pada tepi gingiva gigi insisivus rahang bawah, kemudian diberikan ekstrak jahe merah (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) yang memiliki senyawa aktif dan memiliki pengaruh terhadap respon inflamasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pada preparat histopatologi dari jaringan periodontal tikus tidak ditemukan adanya neutrofil, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak jahe merah (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) tidak berpengaruh terhadap kuantitas neutrofil.&#13;

Title	     	:	The Quantity of Neutrophils due to The Application of Red Ginger (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) Extract of Chronic Periodontitis in Rats (Rattus  norvegicus) &#13;

Chronic periodontitis is the most common form of periodontitis. The major etiology of periodontitis is Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, such as Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Treponema denticola, Tannarela forsythia and Porphyromonas gingivalis which locally invade periodontal tissues and cause deregulation of neutrophils as innate immune. Neutrophils are characteristic of acute inflammation and also be found in the chronic inflammation. The aim of study was to evaluate the quantity of neutrophils due to the application of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) extract of rat chronic periodontitis. In order to induce experimental periodontitis, the mandibular insisivus was assigned to receive wire 0,008 inch in marginal gingival. Then, red ginger (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) extract that has bioactive compounds was topically administered to the rats. The result of this study showed there were no neutrophils in histopathologic of rat’s periodontal tissues. It concluded that there was no effect of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) extract toward the quantity of neutrophils.&#13;
