Title : The Application of Crossword Puzzle Designed by Using Crossword Compiler Software in Enhancing Students’ English Vocabulary Achievement in Reading (An Experimental Study at MAN Rukoh Banda Aceh)

Most of the second grade students at MAN Rukoh Banda Aceh had limited vocabulary, therefore the writer carried out some treatments to overcome the problem. This study aims at examining whether the use of crossword puzzle designed by using Crossword Compiler software affects the students’ performance in learning vocabulary in reading, which focused on the language features of hortatory exposition text. Quantitative approach with experimental study of one group pretest-posttest design was applied. The population of this study was 156 students of the second grade at MAN Rukoh Banda Aceh. 27 students (XI-2 Science Class) were taken as the sample through simple random sampling. To collect the data a set of test was used. The collected data were analyzed by using statistical procedures as suggested by Sudijono (2006). The finding shows that the score improvements of the mean of pre-test that was 44 changed up to 77 on post-test. The t-score value is higher than the value of t-table (t = 11.8>t_t=2.056 ). It means that there is a significant difference, so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, crossword puzzle can be one of the alternative strategies in teaching vocabulary for the second grade students at senior high school.
