Title : Students’ Anxiety in English Speaking Class (A Qualitative
Study at SMA Negeri 3 Banda Aceh) Keywords: Students anxiety, English speaking anxiety.
This study aims to analyze what performances of anxiety experienced by most of the students in English speaking class. A qualitative study used to investigate these matters. The instrument of this study was questionnaire items. The result of the test was analyzed by using speaking anxiety criteria proposed by Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). The result of this study showed that fear of negative evaluation was performance of the anxiety experienced by most of the students in speaking class. While, the anxiety felt by the sudents were because of their self-confidence, less of practice, and less of motivation. Thus, to overcome this problem teachers should be more aware of the students’ anxiety in order to motivate them to speak confidently and fluently in English speaking class.
