Title : Analyzing the Learning Strategies Used by Senior High School Students in Improving Speaking Skill
(A Qualitative Study in SMAN 1 Ingin Jaya)

Keywords: Language learning strategies, Speaking, High achieving learners, Low achieving learners.

This title was chosen since there were many senior high school students who still face difficulties in finding the appropriate strategies to be used in improving speaking. This study was intended to find out the types of learning strategies used by the students as well as the different strategies used by the high and the low achieving learners of the class. Therefore, it only discusses about the learning strategies used by the students to improve speaking skill. Descriptive qualitative was used in this study and the subjects were all of students of third year in class XII A I. Moreover, the instruments used in this study were questionnaire and interview. The finding shows that both of students either high or low achieving students used cognitive strategies, memory strategies, compensation strategies, metacoginitive, affective strategies, and social strategies to improve their speaking. Furthermore, differences in the strategies used by the high and low achieving learners in speaking are found in terms of the frequency of use, strategy category and varieties of strategy. Hence, the language learners, especially low achieving learners should be motivated to develop their learning strategies in order to improve their speaking skills.
