This  study  aims  at  examining  whether  the  use  of  genre-based  approach  improves  the writing  ability  of  MAN  Banda  Aceh  I  students.  Quantitative  approach  with experimental study of pretest-postest control group design was undertaken to overcome the  problems  faced  by  students  in  learning  writing  skill.  The  sample  were  selected  by using random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data in this study was test in form of written test. The researcher use t-test to find the differences between pre test and post test achievement. The result shows that  there is  significant difference between the mean score of pre-test from post-test for the experimental class. It increases from 58.78 to 80.6. However, for the control class, there is no significant increase in the mean score of students’ pre-test and post-test. It only increases 2.88 point from 52.56 to 55.44. Theresult of t-score is 15.69 and the t-value at the level significance 0.05 is 1.67. It proves that the alternative hypothesis of this study is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. It reveals that the application of genre based approach improves the writing ability  of  MAN  Banda  Aceh  I  students.  Thus,  genre  based  approach  can  be  one  of alternative techniques used by the teacher in teaching writing in EFL class.</note>
