Osteomielitis merupakan suatu inflamasi yang terjadi pada tulang, yang berawal dari bagian kavitas medulla, lalu melibatkan tulang konselus dan pada akhirnya meluas hingga tulang kortikal sampai mengenai periosteum. Osteomielitis biasanya terjadi akibat adanya suatu infeksi odontogenik yang hebat, dimana terjadi ketidakseimbangan antara virulensi kuman dan daya tahan tubuh si penderita. Organisme penyebab utamanya adalah Staphylococcus aureus dan Staphylococus epidermidis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran kasus osteomielitis rahang di Instalasi Gigi dan Mulut di Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah dr. Zainoel Abidin Banda Aceh Tahun 2005-2011 berdasarkan usia, jenis kelamin, dan lokasi/regio osteomielitis rahang. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam peneltian ini adalah deskriptif analitik, dengan menggunakan desain penelitian cross sectional. Subjek penelitian berupa data sekunder yang didapat dari rekam medis pasien di Instalasi Gigi dan Mulut di Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah dr. Zainoel Abidin Banda Aceh Tahun 2005-2011. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jumlah kasus osteomielitis rahang yang ditemukan adalah sebanyak 12 kasus. Usia pasien yang paling sering mengalami osteomielitis rahang kelompok usia 21-30 tahun. Laki-laki lebih sering mengalami osteomielitis rahang. Mandibula adalah lokasi kelainan osteomielitis rahang yang paling sering terjadi.

Osteomyelitis of the jaw is an inflammation process of the entire bone including the cortex and periosteum, recognizing that the pathological process is rarely confined to the endosteum. The primary cause of chronic osteomyelitis of the jaws is infections by odontogenic microorganism, osteomyelitis of the jaw occurs when an imbalance between the virulence of the bacteria and the immune system of patients. The causative organisms of osteomyelitis are Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcuc epidermidis. The purpose of the study to describe the cases of osteomyelitis of the jaw in Dental and Oral Department of dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital Banda Aceh in 2005-2012 from age, sex, and the region of osteomyelitis of the jaw. The type of this study is analytic descriptive, and using cross sectional design. The subjects of this study are secondary data gained from patient’s medical record in Dental and Oral Department of dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital Banda Aceh during the year of 2005-2011. 12 patients who had been diagnosis for osteomiyelits of the jaw. Most patients with osteomyelitis of the jaw are aged 21-30 years old. In analysis of 12 cases osteomyelitis of the jaw there was a males predominance. The most common location of the osteomyelitis was in the mandible.
