ABSTRACT
Name : Misna Yanti
Student No. : 0706102050088
Study Program : English Language Education
Title : The Effectiveness of STAD in Teaching Speaking
Keywords: Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD), Teaching Speaking
The objective of this study is to look at some given theories and/or research on the use
of STAD technique for teaching speaking skill. Speaking is very essential skill for
foreign language students as it becomes the standard of English mastery (Richards,
2008). However, most of the students still find some barriers in improving their ability
in speaking such as; the students are afraid of making mistake, they are afraid of being
laughed at by his or her friends, they are afraid of having lack of confidence in their
ability, and they have less vocabulary. These cases, however, can be solved through the
implementati of Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) technique (Slavin,
1995). The method used in this study is library research. Readings obtained from
various sources are processsed and described in descriptive way. The study found that
using STAD can facilitate the students to exchange their ideas and/or information in a
useful manner (Slavin, 1994; Zhang, 2010). Besides, each student has equal opportunity
to speak or practice the language (Bell, 2011; Harmer, 1994). Further, the proper
application of STAD technique by the teacher possibly exert the quality of student’s
speaking ability. Based on the research findings and experts' statements, it is found that
STAD technique is effective to enhance the students' speaking skill.</note>
