Klasifikasi lima kelas tutupan lahan menghasilkan akurasi tinggi (Overall Accuracy 90,87%–96,97%; Kappa 0,87–0,96), menunjukkan penyusutan hutan 23,7% dan peningkatan bukaan tambang aktif hampir empat kali lipat (53,03 ha menjadi 208,66 ha).

This study analyzes the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of illegal gold mining (PETI) in Sungai Mas District, West Aceh Regency, for the period 2017–2025, using high-resolution (3-meter) PlanetScope satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This study was driven by environmental degradation due to PETI, particularly riparian forest damage and water pollution, with the aim of identifying and mapping PETI locations, analyzing land cover changes, determining the suitability of areas for the establishment of Community Mining Areas (WPR) and formulating recommendations for sustainable WPR priority zones. The methodology combines visual image interpretation, Random Forest classification with spectral indices (NDVI, SAVI, NDWI), the Mann-Kendall test for temporal trend analysis, and multi-criteria analysis with regulatory (40%), accessibility (30%), and socio-community (30%) parameters. The results identified dozens of PETI polygons concentrated on the convex side of the river bend, consistent with the pattern of alluvial gold deposits. Classification of five land cover classes yielded high accuracy (Overall Accuracy 90.87%–96.97%; Kappa 0.87–0.96), indicating a 23.7% forest loss and a nearly fourfold increase in active mining openings (from 53.03 ha to 208.66 ha). The Mann-Kendall test confirmed a significant decreasing trend in vegetation (Z = −5.41 for NDVI; Z = −5.30 for SAVI) with increasing surface humidity (Z = +4.70 for NDWI), indicating systematic environmental degradation due to PETI expansion. Based on the integration of spatial-temporal analysis and SWOT matrix, the study recommends three priority zones for WPR: Zone 1 (Gampong Tungkop, Tutut, Geudong, Drien Sibak) formalization through BUMDes with a ban on excavators and mercury-free processing; Zone 2 (Gampong Kajeung, Tuwi Saya) spatial restrictions accompanied by diversification of the agricultural economy; Zone 3 (Hulu Gampong Lancong and protected forest areas) total conservation with social forestry and land rehabilitation programs. The conclusion confirms that PlanetScope imagery-based remote sensing technology provides a measurable scientific basis for the formulation of policies for the formalization of PETI into WPR that are legal, sustainable, and socially just
