The current study presents the log analysis results from two wells in Area X, North Sumatra Basin, Indonesia. The geophysical logs comprising gamma ray (GR), caliper (Cali), resistivity (ILD and ILM), neutron (NPHI), and density (RHOB) are used to study the petrophysical characteristics of the main identified reservoirs in this field. The objective of this research is to analyze and calculate reservoir petrophysical properties such as shale volume, porosity, water saturation, and Net Pay thickness for hydrocarbon exploration purposes. Petrophysical analysis based of well log data indicates that both wells consist of alternating sandstone and shale lithologies within the Baong and Peutu Formations. The computed petrophysical parameters show that well X01 has an average shale volume of 41.5%, effective porosity of 23.6%, and water saturation of 57.2%, while well X02 has an average shale volume of 35.6%, effective porosity of 4.1%, and water saturation of 66.4%. The application of cut-off values on shale volume, effective porosity, and water saturation indicates that the reservoir interval in the Baong Formation (ZR-3 zone of well X01) is more continuous, with a net-to-gross pay ratio reaching more than 80%. However, it lies within the water–hydrocarbon transition zone. In contrast, the Peutu Formation (ZR-4 zone of well X02) produces a very thin Net Pay of less than 1%, yet shows the strongest hydrocarbon indication due to its very low water saturation of less than 30%. The overall results indicate that hydrocarbon accumulations in Area X develop locally within sandstone intercalations acting as reservoirs. It is recommended to integrate more wells, seismic, and core data to better evaluate the reservoirs.
