Motif mato-mato dari Simeulue memiliki nilai budaya dan keunikan visual, namun
pemanfaatannya pada desain tas modern masih terbatas, sehingga diperlukan
pengembangan tas bermotif mato-mato sebagai upaya pelestarian budaya yang
relevan dengan selera remaja masa kini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendesain
dan mengaplikasikan motif mato-mato pada produk tas serta mengukur minat dan
respons remaja terhadap penggunaan motif tradisional tersebut sebagai upaya
pelestarian budaya Simeulue. Sampel penelitian merupakan siswa dan siswi SMP
Negeri 11 Banda Aceh dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 75 responden yang
ditentukan menggunakan rumus Slovin dengan total populasi sebanyak 297 siswa/i.
Penelitian diawali dengan proses perancangan desain tas yang disesuaikan dengan
karakteristik remaja, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pembuatan dua produk tas, yaitu
sling bag dan tas ransel, yang menerapkan motif mato-mato menggunakan teknik
patchwork. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner menggunakan skala
Likert. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata skor produk A sebesar
77,38% dan produk B sebesar 82,40%, yang secara umum berada pada kategori
“Hampir Sepenuhnya”. Tas ransel memperoleh skor persentase yang lebih tinggi
dibandingkan sling bag, terutama pada aspek fungsi, kenyamanan, dan potensi
pengembangan produk. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa penggabungan motif
tradisional mato-mato dengan desain tas modern mampu meningkatkan minat
remaja terhadap motif tradisional Simeulue. Dengan demikian, kreasi tas bermotif
mato-mato dapat menjadi media pelestarian budaya yang efektif melalui produk
fungsional yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan dan selera remaja masa kini.

Mato-mato motifs from Simeulue have cultural value and visual uniqueness, but their use in modern bag designs is still limited, so the development of mato-matopatterned bags is needed as an effort to preserve culture that is relevant to the tastes of today's teenagers. This research aims to design and apply mato-mato motifs in bag products and measure adolescents' interest and response to the use of these traditional motifs as an effort to preserve Simeulue culture. The research sample was students of SMP Negeri 11 Banda Aceh with a sample of 75 respondents determined using the Slovin formula with a total population of 297 students. The research began with the process of designing a bag design that was tailored to the characteristics of teenagers, then continued with the manufacture of two bag products, namely sling bags and backpacks, which applied mato-mato motifs using patchwork techniques. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire using the Likert scale. The results of the study showed that the average score of product A was 77.38% and product B was 82.40%, which is generally in the category of "Almost Completely". Backpacks have a higher percentage score than sling bags, especially in terms of functionality, comfort, and product development potential. These results show that the combination of traditional mato-mato motifs with modern bag designs is able to increase adolescents' interest in traditional Simeulue motifs. Thus, the creation of bags with mato-mato motifs can be an effective medium for cultural preservation through functional products that suit the needs and tastes of today's teenagers.
