This research entitled "The Implementation of Annotating Strategy in Improving Students' Ability in Reading comprehension" is intended to make the students active in the process of reading comprehension by doing some steps of annotating; underlining key words and sentences, making bracket important passages,
connecting related ideas with lines, and outlining the main ideas inthe margin.
These steps could make the students interact directly with the text The reading
material given to the students was descriptive text. The population and samples of this study was the first grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Lhokseumawe. There were two classes as the samples. The first class was accounting class as experimental group which consisted of 38 students. This class was taught by annotating strategy. The other class was networking computer class as control group which also consisted of38 students. The data collected in this research were obtained by administrating pretest and posttest. The test was multiple choice items that'consist of ten questions. The test included the schematic structure of descriptive text; identification and description. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 15.0. The paired t-test was used in order to investigate the significant differences between the two means of the two groups. Based on the statistical
analysis, it was found that the paired t-test of experimental and control class was •
11,385 with significance 0,00. The level of significance is 0,05. This means 0,00
< 0,05, this indicates that there is significant difference between posttest of experimental and control class. The difference of mean score between posttest of
experimental and control class is considerably meaningful. To follow up the
finding of this research, some suggestions are needed to make reading an active and meaningful activity. The English teacher should use various and suitable strategies or techniques such as annotating strategy in the process of teaching reading. In the end, this experimental research might have weaknesses and therefore the further studies are required.
