This thesis entitles “Teaching Reading by using Direct Method for Senior High School
(An Experimental Study to First Year Students of MAN 3 Banda Aceh) .” One class pre-test and post-test experimental design was applied in teaching at MAN 3 Banda Aceh.
This study is intended to find out whether teaching reading by using direct method can
improve students’ reading skill in the recount text. The population of the study was the
first year of MAN 3 Banda Aceh, and the sample of this study was the students of class
X IA-1 that consist of 28 students. The instrument for the study is test. The data is the
score of pre-test and post-test. From these tests, the writer found that the mean score of
pre-test is 49,55 and the mean score of post-test is 73,46 The result shows that the mean
of post-test is higher than that of pre -test. The conclusion drawn from this study is
reading teaching by using direct method in teaching recount text improves the students’
reading ability
