Dental Clinical Students are among those who experience a highly demanding educational phase, as they must undergo academic and clinical learning processes simultaneously, including direct practice and interaction with patients. Such pressure can lead to perceived stress, and in managing this stress, emotional intelligence plays a role in influencing the level of perceived stress both directly and indirectly through coping strategies, whether adaptive or maladaptive. This study aims to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and perceived stress mediated by coping strategies in Dental Clinical Students. The research employed a quantitative correlational design with parallel mediation regression analysis, involving 422 Dental Clinical Students aged 20 to 30 years, selected using stratified random sampling and convenience sampling techniques. Data were collected using three adapted and reliability-tested instruments: the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10; α = 0.84), the Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale (BEIS-10; α = 0.73), and the Brief COPE scale focusing on adaptive and maladaptive coping dimensions (α = 0.83 and α = 0.62, respectively). The hypothesis testing using Hayes’ PROCESS Model 4 revealed that emotional intelligence is directly associated with perceived stress (B = -0.463; p < 0.05), as well as indirectly through mediation by adaptive coping (B = -0.062; p < 0.05) and maladaptive coping strategies (B = -0.058; p < 0.05) among Dental Clinical Students. This indicates that higher emotional intelligence in students tends to increase the use of adaptive coping and reduce maladaptive coping, thereby influencing the perceived stress level both directly and indirectly.
