<note>Key words: cooperative learning, reading comprehension

Reading comprehension is one of the four skills that must be mastered by students at senior high school. It is usually integrated with other skills. In that level, the aim of teaching reading comprehension is to enable students to have basic reading skills. With those skills they are expected to be able to get main ideas from a variety of texts; get detail, certain and explicit information from a variety of texts; and identify certain words in a paragraph or text. However the outcome of the teaching of reading comprehension is yet unsatisfactory
Based on preliminary observation conducted firstly in October 2006 at SMA Granada Banda Aceh and secondly in March 2007 at SMA Katolik Budi Dharma Banda Aceh, it was found that the students were usually provided with learning situations in
which the ordinary way of teaching reading comprehension (ask students to read the text orally, to find the unfamiliar words, then to answer the questions based on the reading texts) prevailed. In fact such a strategy did not adequately contribute to the increase of the students' reading ability, Thereby the results did not yet meet the minimum ability of students to read for comprehension
Regarding the unsatisfactory reading comprehension of the second year students
at SMA Granada and SMA Katolik Budi Dharma, this study is intended to introduce a suitable learning strategy that can improve their reading comprehension. The strategy gives a clear direction to students on how to learn to read for comprehension effectively The strategy selected is cooperative learning with Group-Work, Pair-Work and STAD models of learning because through this kind of classroom management the students are provided with various learning activities within which they are required to share one another in accomplishing their reading comprehension tasks. With such leaning strategies, the students are expected to be more freely involved in the process of acquiring knowledge (reading for literal and inferential comprehension) for they are demanded to be responsible for their own learning.
The objective of the present study is to investigate whether the cooperative learning strategies used in teaching reading comprehension can increase the second year students' reading comprehension. This study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a collaborative design. The procedure of the research consists of four major steps, i.c planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting of the teaching and learning process. This study consists of two cycles in which the first cycle contains three meetings and the second cycle comprises two meetings for teaching and learning activities including the assessment. The subject of the study is the second year students of SMA Katolik Budi Dharma comprising of I6 students
