Key words: obstacle, listening skill, teachers' attitude, listening material, listening equipment

This study was intended to obtain information on the teachers' attitudes towards teaching listening, the difficulties faced by the teachers in conducting the listening process, the frequency of teaching listening in one semester, and the role of the school in providing listening materials and equipment for teachers to support teaching listening.
The subjects of the study were twenty six English teachers at thirteen Senior High Schools in Banda Aceh. In order to answer the research questions, a qualitative research design was used. The data were collected through questionnaires,
observations, and interviews. The data collected from the respondents were analyzed by using a simple percentage.
The result of the study showed that the teachers have a positive attitude towards listening (96.15%). The students also have positive attitude towards this skill. It was also found that tape recorder and cassettes were the most common equipments used by teachers in teaching listening. Using this kind of equipment made the student familiarize with native speakers' voices. However, most of the students (92.30%) got difficulties in comprehending the native speakers' voices.
The availability of listening materials is still the main obstacle for the majority of the teachers. It was not easy to find listening materials in any bookstores in Banda Aceh. They only have the materials for testing the student's ability in listening rather than for learning listening. Furthermore, most of the English teachers in senior high schools did not allocate enough time for teaching listening. It was found that they only taught listening once in a week or six times in one semester. They rarely taught this skill because of the lack of appropriate listening materials. Head master who has an important role in supporting the success of teaching listening did not fully pay attention in providing listening materials and equipment.
From this study some suggestions can be drawn. The results of this study are useful for the English teachers as a feedback for improving the teaching of listening. By allocating more time for teaching listening in English subject, the teachers are expected to improve the student's ability in comprehending the native speaker's voice. For the headmasters, the result of the study can be valuable feedback in providing the listening materials and equipment for the schools because most of the English teachers at Senior High School in Banda Aceh were difficult to find the appropriate listening materials.
