Abstract Name : Rahmi Student No. : 0606102050037 Study Program : English Education Thesis Title : Teaching Listening by Using Total Physical Response to Elementary School Students The title of this minor thesis is “Teaching Listening by Using Total Physical Response to Elementary School Students”. This study is intended to discuss theories and research finding that related to the use of Total Physical Response in teaching listening to elementary school students. As Howatt and Dakin (1974) defined listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. According to Richard and Rodgers (1986: 87), Total physical Response is a language teaching method built around the coordination of speech and action, and it attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity. The method used in this study was library research. The data were taken from books, articles, journals, websites, and other reading sources. In collecting the data the writer employed several ways: first, the writer identified the materials to be covered. Second, the writer looked for the relevant information that came from reading the books, articles, journals, internet websites, and other reading sources. Third, the results of the exploration of the various reading was then elaborated and discussed to find out the solution to the problems earlier stated in the background of this study. Finally, the writer made a conclusion and summary of the relevant data to the subject matter. The study found that the applying TPR is very appropriate and important to reach the better progress of students’ abilities in understanding listening subject especially for ESL learners. Accordingly, the writer suggested the teacher could apply Total Physical Response to improve elementary students’ listening ability.
