Competency Based Curriculum has been socialized and implemented since 2004. SMP 2 Sigli is a school that has implemented the curriculum in the year stated. Therefore, this study extracted information on the implementation of Competency Based Curriculum in teaching English at SMP 2 Sigli.
This study obtained information on: 1) teachers' preparation for
teaching English. 2) the implementation of CBC teaching, 3) the implementation
of evaluation students' achievement based on CBC and 4) the problem faced by the teachers in implementing CBC in teaching English. The subject of the study was all English teachers at SMP 2 Sigli.
The study developed a qualitative design in order to answer the research questions. The data were collected through observations, interviews and documentations and collected data were analyzed by using percentage.
The documents for teaching preparation (syllabus, lesson plan and
teaching materials) and interview guides were used to answer the first research
problem. The findings imply that 43.86% of the teachers did not comprehend exactly what the CBC is, However, the teachers owned the same lesson plans as the other teachers did. because the lesson plans were prepared in Subject Teacher's Discussing (MGMP) by orienting to the syllabus available. In line with the teaching preparation, 57.14% of the teachers still depended much on the textbook. For the second and the third research problems, the data were obtained through class observations. The results show that 43.86% of the teachers still conducted teacher-centered classes. One of other teachers (14.29%) tried to perform CBC English teaching. but not all students were engaged in the activities because the instructions given were still not adequate. The other three teachers practiced CBC well in the teaching process. However, two of them were English instructors. In evaluating students' achievements, most of the teachers did not conduct non test type such as; performance test and portfolios as well as remedial teaching as the main characteristic in CBC evaluation
To obtain the data on the problems faced by the teachers in implementing CBC in teaching English the interview guide was used. The data showed that the teachers faced three kinds of obstacles. The obstacles were teachers' professionalisms, school facilities and students. Four of the teachers had never got specific training on CBC They were familiar with the CBC in regular
meeting of Subject Teachers' Discussing (MGMP). The problems due to school facilities were the inavailability of language laboratory, audio-visual facilities and special classroom for language learning, English CBC book, English game
facilities and English Extracurricular activities. The problems concerned to the students were the capacity of the students in the class and the ability as well as the creativity of the students
