This thesis discusses the implementation of crossword puzzle in students' group in vocabulary class. This research was conducted to solve some problems found in vocabulary class. The problems faced both by the students and the researcher. The students faced some problems in mastering English vocabulary especially nouns, verbs and adjectives formed by adding prefixes and suffixes. Besides that, the researcher himself also faced problems in using teaching media and his perfomance in teaching vocabulary in his class. This research was intended to increase the quality of the process of teaching and learning vocabulary. This research was conducted to answer three questions of the research problems, they were; how crossword puzzle implemented in students' vocabulary class, how crossword puzzle be used to improve students' vocabulary mastery, and how the students respond toward the implementation of crossword puzzle in their vocabulary class. The research was Collaborative Classroom Action Research and it was done in two cycles by following the procedure of the action research
consisting of four steps; planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. There were three meetings in each cycle. The instruments used to collect the data for this research were test, observation checklist and questionnaire. Test was used to measure the students' improvement in mastering vocabulary. Observation checklist was used to observe both the researcher's perfomance and the students' participation in the classroom. Questionnaire was used to know the students' responses toward the implementation of crossword puzzle in group in their vocabulary class. The result of this research shows that the implementation of crossword puzzle in students' group in vocabulary class improve the students' vocabulary mastery. The students' improvement in mastering vocabulary especially words formed by adding prefixes and suffixes could be proved by the result of the test given to the students. The students' average score of pre-test is
53.17 and it increases to 69.51 in the post test of cycle I. The improvement was
16.34 %. In cycle 2, the students' average score increased I 0.24 % from the result of post test in cycle I, it was 79.75. The improvement of students' average score from pre test to the students' average score in post test cycle 2 was 26.58 %. The other findings were from the observation checklist to the students' activity. It shows that the students' participation increased from 71.90 % or in level good in
the first cycle to 85.23 % or in level very good in the second cycle. It means that the implementation of crossword puzzle in teaching vocabulary had successfully improved the students' participation in class. Next, from the observation checklist to researcher's performance shows that the percentage of the researcher's performance in the first cycle is 72.82 % or in level good. In the second cycle, the researcher's performance increased to 87.69 % or in level very good. It means that the researcher could increase his teaching quality by the implementation of the crossword puzzle in his vocabulary class. Furthermore, the data from the questionnaire shows that the students' response toward the implementation of crossword puzzle in students' group in their vocabulary class was 3.0 I or categorized in level Agree. It means that the students' had positive response to the action.
