Title : Improving Students’ Speaking Ability by Using Talking Stick
Technique (An Experimental Research at Second Year Students
of SMP Negeri 18 Banda Aceh)

This study aims at examining whether the use of talking stick technique solve students’
problems in teaching speaking which is focused on expressing speech act. Quantitative
approach with experimental study of one group pretest-posttest design was undertaken
to overcome the problems faced by students. The data obtained from oral test involving 25
second year students showed the score improvements of the mean of pre-test 50 to 82 on post-test. The t-score value is higher than the value of t-table (t = 5.11> . It means
that the difference was significant, so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and
the null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Indeed, talking stick technique can be one of
alternative techniques used by the teacher in teaching English particularly teaching
speaking in EFL class.
