ABSTRACT In the last 7,500 years, at least 11 tsunamis have hit Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar. However, the preparedness efforts of the Banda Aceh citizens have not been fully implemented sustainably. This study attempts to evaluate how the Banda Aceh citizens view the factors that influence housing choices, urban spatial planning, tsunami preparedness measures, and tsunami communication, information and education (CIE) media. This study uses a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative. Data were obtained through interviews with eight respondents from various backgrounds and community groups and a questionnaire survey involving 305 survey respondents in six sub-districts in Banda Aceh City. This study explains that the citizens have not yet received socialization about the City Spatial Plan and CIE media in the community is still inadequate. This study also shows that the main factors that influence people's decisions to choose a place to live include safety from tsunamis, their own house/land and inheritance from family. This study is expected to help the City Government in providing scientific materials related to tsunami mitigation aspects.
