Toxic friendship dapat disadari saat persahabatan yang dijalankan selalu membuat
individu merasa buruk atau negatif, sehingga dapat mengganggu kesehatan
psikologisnya. Efek yang ditimbulkan dari pertemanan toxic pada psikologis dapat
membuat individu merasa rendah diri, membenci diri sendiri, dan menjadi individu
yang pesimis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana hubungan toxic
friendship dan self esteem dalam hubungan interpersonal pada mahasiswa generasi
Z di Universitas Syiah Kuala. Teori yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah Teori
Pertukaran Sosial (Social Exchange Theory) oleh Thibaut dan Harold Kelley.
Metode penelitian ini ialah kualitatif eksplanatif melalui wawancara mendalam
dengan lima informan, yaitu empat informan mahasiswa yang sedang atau pernah
memiliki hubungan pertemanan yang toxic serta merupakan korban dari
pertemanan toxic tersebut dan satu informan ahli psikologi. Hasil penelitian
menunjukkan bahwa toxic friendship berdampak pada terganggunya self esteem
mereka dalam dinamika hubungan interpersonal mahasiswa generasi Z di
Universitas Syiah Kuala. Bahkan terdapat dampak yang signifikan dari toxic
friendship ini pada salah satu mahasiswa, yaitu melibatkan perilaku self harm dan
berakhir dengan memerlukan kunjungan ke psikolog. Terdapat tujuh tipe toxic
friendship yang sebagian besarnya dialami oleh mahasiswa yang dapat diurutkan
dari yang paling dominan hingga yang paling jarang ditemui, yaitu The User, The
Drama Queen, The Critical Cathy, The Gossip Hound, The Leech, The Negative
Nellie, dan The Rebel. Lingkup pertemanan toxic ini berdampak pada self esteem
mahasiswa, yang juga dapat diurutkan dari yang paling berefek hingga yang paling
tidak berefek, yaitu Social Self Esteem, Performance Self Esteem, dan Physical
Apperance Self Esteem.

Toxic friendship can be realized when the friendship that is carried out always makes the individual feel bad or negative, so that it can interfere with their psychological health. The effects of toxic friendship on psychology can make individuals feel inferior, hate themselves, and become pessimistic individuals. This study aims to determine the relationship between toxic friendship and self-esteem in interpersonal relationships in generation Z students at Syiah Kuala University. The theory used in this study is the Social Exchange Theory by Thibaut and Harold Kelley. This research method is qualitative explanatory through in-depth interviews with five informants, namely four student informants who are or have had toxic friendships and are victims of toxic friendships and one informant who is a psychology expert. The results of the study showed that toxic friendship had an impact on disrupting their self-esteem in the dynamics of interpersonal relationships of generation Z students at Syiah Kuala University. There was even a significant impact of this toxic friendship on one of the students, namely involving self-harm behavior and ending with the need for a visit to a psychologist. There are seven types of toxic friendships that are mostly experienced by students that can be ranked from the most dominant to the least, namely The User, The Drama Queen, The Critical Cathy, The Gossip Hound, The Leech, The Negative Nellie, and The Rebel. The scope of this toxic friendship has an impact on students' self-esteem, which can also be ranked from the most to the least effect, namely Social Self Esteem, Performance Self Esteem, and Physical Apperance Self Esteem.
