Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis kohesi gramatikal pada bagian pembahasan tesis mahasiswa S1. Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis kohesi gramatikal yang digunakan dalam diskusi dan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana mahasiswa memanfaatkan perangkat kohesif gramatikal dalam tesisnya. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah skripsi dari Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Syiah Kuala. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan lembar analisis sebagai instrumen penelitian. Peneliti mengkaji bagian pembahasan tesis untuk mengidentifikasi unsur kohesif gramatikal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga jenis kohesi gramatikal yang digunakan dalam diskusi. Peneliti mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasikan setiap kalimat menurut teori Halliday dan Hasan (1976). Terdapat 187 kejadian kohesi tata bahasa, termasuk 91 kemunculan konjungsi, yang mewakili frekuensi tertinggi yaitu 49%. Referensi muncul sebanyak 80 kali, terhitung 41%, dan substitusi adalah yang paling sedikit digunakan, terjadi 16 kali, atau 9%. Temuan lain mengungkapkan bahwa konjungsi aditif paling sering digunakan pada bagian pembahasan skripsi. Selain itu, memahami kohesi tata bahasa dapat membantu siswa memastikan bahwa kalimat mereka mengalir secara logis dan jelas.
This study focuses on analyzing grammatical cohesion in the discussion section of an undergraduate student's thesis. This descriptive qualitative research aims to identify the types of grammatical cohesion used in the discussion and to determine the extent to which students utilize grammatical cohesive devices in their theses. The data source for this research is an undergraduate thesis from the English Education Department at Syiah Kuala University. To collect the data, the researcher used an analytical sheet as the research instrument. The researcher examined the discussion section of the thesis to identify grammatical cohesive elements. The results showed that three types of grammatical cohesion were used in the discussion. The researcher identified and classified each sentence according to the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). There were 187 instances of grammatical cohesion, including 91 occurrences of conjunctions, which represented the highest frequency at 49%. References appeared 80 times, accounting for 41%, and substitution was the least used, occurring 16 times, or 9%. Another finding revealed that additive conjunctions were the most frequently used in the discussion section of undergraduate theses. Furthermore, understanding grammatical cohesion can help students ensure that their sentences flow logically and clearly.
