Title : The Use of Group Investigation in Developing Speaking Skill

Keywords: Group Investigation, Speaking skill

Speaking is one of the central aspects in communication and it becomes a crucial part of second language learning and teaching. For that reason, paying attention in teaching this skill is really required without ignoring the other three skills. To be successful in teaching speaking, students should be provided with opportunities to explore the language by communicating, co-operating, and interacting with one another. Hence, they can experience and investigate the real use of the language. One of the strategies which gives such opportunities to students is Group Investigation technique. Therefore, a library research concerning the use of Group Investigation in developing speaking skill was conducted. Due to the satisfactory results found by the previous researchers, Group Investigation succeeds in raising students’ interest in learning, bearing the students’ activeness/participation in producing oral language, and increasing academic achievement. Consequently, it is recommended that English teachers use the technique in teaching speaking since it offers the stages of learning (investigation, presentation, evaluation, etc.) which are beneficial in developing the skill. In summary, Group Investigation is one of the techniques giving chance to students to explore language orally, promote students’ activeness, and reduce their inhibition, thus better academic achievement can be attained.
