<note>Writing is one of four language skills that should be mastered by students in learning English. For junior high school students, teaching writing aims at developing students’ competence in expressing short and simple messages (some kinds of text) to interact with people in their environment. Students’ ability in writing the texts can be assessed individually or in group-work. For that reason, a descriptive qualitative study toward 20 of the second grade students of SMPN 6 Banda Aceh was conducted to see the differences of their writing ability through individual and group-work assessment. As the method of this study, students’ writing papers of recount text for both individual and group-work were collected to be investigated in order to find out the differences. However, from the papers, the result shows that though the score of every aspect of group-work writing seemed higher than individual works (76.35and 80.2), the score were still at the same category (good to average). Therefore it can be concluded that there were no significant differences found in the students’ individual and group-work assessment the average score for both assessment were at rank of good to average. Consequently, it is better for other researchers who may interested in this issue to conduct the research in more than one class of subject, thus the result will come out differently.</note>
