The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Using Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach in teaching speaking for the second grade students of State Senior Vocational High School (SMKN) No. 3 Lhokseumawe. This study employed two classes as the sample which classified into the experimental and control classes. The experimental group was taught by using the CTL approach, while the control group was taught by using conventional method. In collecting the data, test and questionnaire were used, and then the collected data ware analyzed by using computer software of Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS). The research finding shows that the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group, 74, is higher than that of the control group, 60.9. Furthermore, the result of t-test reveals that the score of experimental group is higher than that in the control group (11.512>4.064). The data indicates that the students taught by using CTL approach significantly achieved better score in speaking than those taught by using conventional method. Hence, the alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. In line with the progression among the speaking sub-skills, comprehensibility was the most improved with the average score 3.4 of the 4.0 as the maximum. It shows that the students acquired better understanding after the implementation of CTL approach. Moreover, the result of the data analysis from the questionnaires indicates that almost all students (93.3%) respond positively toward the CTL application since it effectively improves their speaking skill.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efek dari penerapan Pendekatan Pembelajaran dan Pengajaran Kontekstual (CTL) dalam pengajaran speaking yang diaplikasikan pada siswa kelas dua Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Negeri (SMKN) No. 3 Lhokseumawe. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua kelas sebagai sampel penelitian, yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kontrol. Kelompok eksperimen diajarakan dengan menggunakan pendekatan CTL, sementara kelompok kontrol diajarkan dengan menggunakan metode konvensional. Dalam mengumpulkan data, tes dan angket digunakan, dan kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan software komputer yang disebut Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai rata-rata post-test kelompok eksperimen yaitu 74 lebih tinggi dari nilai rata-rata post-test kelompok kontrol 60,9. Selanjutnya, hasil t-test mengungkapkan bahwa nilai t-test kelompok eksperimen lebih tinggi dari kelompok kontrol yaitu (11.512>4.064). Data ini menunjukkan bahwa para siswa yang diajarakan dengan pendekatan CTL mampu memperoleh nilai speaking yang lebih baik secara signifikan bila dibandingkan dengan mereka yang diajarkan dengan metode konvensional. Dengan demikian, hipothesis alternative diterima dan hipotesis nol ditolak. Seiring dengan peningkatan nilai diantara sub-skill dalam speaking, aspek pemahaman merupakan yang paling meningkat dengan nilai rata-rata 3.4 dari 4.0 sebagai nilai maksimal. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa para siswa mendapatkan pemahaman yang lebih baik setelah diajarakan dengan pendekatan CTL. Disamping itu, hasil dari analisa data angket menunjukkan bahwa hampir seluruh siswa (93.3%) merespon positif penerapan CTL karena CTL secara effective mampu meningkatkan kemampuan speaking mereka.
