Title : The Use of Picture Series to Improve Students’ Ability in
Writing Recount Text (An Experimental Research at SMPN 3 Banda Aceh)

This research is an experimental study which uses one group pre test-post test design. It was conducted at SMPN 3 Banda Aceh. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the use of picture series improves students’ ability in writing recount text as well as to find out which aspect of writing improves the most when picture series are used in teaching writing. Based on the result of the study, it is found that the students’ mean scores of pre test and post test are different. Students’ mean scores of pre test is 42.7 and 77.1 for post test. Then the t-score is 14.9 while the t-table is 2.037. Because t-score is higher than t-table (14.9>2.037), Ha is accepted, and Ho is rejected. Furthermore, the progress of students’ score shows that vocabulary improves the most when picture series are used in teaching writing. The progress is proved since vocabulary gains 8.1 while the others get fewer mean scores (organization: 6, content: 6.1, grammar: 6.2, and mechanics: 7.9). Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that picture series improves students’ ability in writing recount text
