Title : Improving Students’ Skill in Writing Descriptive Text
by Using Picture Media (A Classroom Action Research
at Grade VIII, SMPN 1 Manyak Payed Aceh Tamiang)

Keyword:...
This Classroom Action Research aims to find out whether the use of picture media can improve the grade VIII students’ skill of SMPN 1 Manyak Payed, Aceh Tamiang in writing descriptive texts. Based on researcher’s preliminary research, 13 out of 28 students had the English scores below the KKM score. In relation to this issue, the researcher had a chance to interview the teacher and some students of the grade VIII. She found that one of the student’s failures in writing, especially descriptive texts could be affected by the in availability of teaching media due to the teacher’s restriction of knowledge, creativity, and willingness. The instruments of this research were test, diary notes, interview and observation checklist. An action, teaching writing descriptive texts by using pictures, was done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages of activities, namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The result of research showed that in cycle I from 28 students taking a test for writing a descriptive text, 64,3% met the KKM. In cycle II, however, from 26 students taking the test of writing a descriptive text, 100% of the students fulfilled the KKM score. Based on this research findings picture media are recommended for the teaching of writing as they can reasonably improve the students’ skill in writing.
