Penelitian ini mengkaji interaksi antara guru dan siswa dalam hal pertanyaan guru di dalam kelas. Penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis jenis-jenis pertanyaan dan tipe pertanyaan yang dominan digunakan guru di dalam kelas, implikasinya, serta perspektif guru dan siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan format analisis deskriptif, dengan data dikumpulkan melalui observasi di enam kali pertemuan kelas dengan tiga orang guru dan wawancara dengan tiga orang guru dan delapan orang siswa di MTsN 1 Banda Aceh. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa para guru menggunakan semua jenis dari pertanyaan guru. Berdasarkan framework Richards dan Lockhart, ditemukan 25% pertanyaan prosedural, 73% pertanyaan konvergen, dan 2% pertanyaan divergen. Kemudian, berdasarkan konsep Tsui, ditemukan 96% pertanyaan tertutup dan 4% pertanyaan terbuka. Sementara itu, berdasarkan teori Kao dan Weng, ditemukan 96% pertanyaan display dan 4% pertanyaan referensial. Selain itu, jenis pertanyaan yang dominan digunakan oleh guru adalah konvergen, tertutup, dan display. Ditambah lagi, jenis-jenis pertanyaan tersebut memiliki implikasi yang berbeda: untuk mendorong pemikiran kritis, mengecek pemahaman, memotivasi siswa untuk berbicara, dan mengecek pengetahuan awal siswa. Oleh karena itu, guru dan siswa percaya bahwa pertanyaan guru itu penting. Penelitian ini akan membantu guru menganalisis jenis pertanyaan mereka di kelas. Dengan demikian, mereka dapat membangun lebih banyak interaksi dan membantu siswa mendapatkan lebih banyak pemahaman dan keterampilan berpikir kritis.
This research examines the interaction between teachers and students on teachers’ questioning in the classroom. This qualitative research with a case study approach aims to analyze the types and dominant type of questions teachers use in the classroom, the implications, and the perspectives of teachers and students. The result of this research was descriptive analysis format, and the data were collected by observation in six classes meeting with three teachers and interview three teachers and eight students at MTSN 1 Banda Aceh. The result showed that the teachers used all types of teachers’ questioning. Based on Richards and Lockhart's framework, it found 25% of procedural, 73% of convergent, and 2% of divergent. Then, based on Tsui's concept, it found 96% of closed and 4% of open. Meanwhile, based on Kao and Weng's theory, there were 96% of display and 4% of referential. Moreover, the dominant types of questions used by the teacher were convergent, closed, and display. Furthermore, those types of questions have different implications: to promote critical thinking, to check understanding, to motivate students’ speaking practice, and to check students' prior knowledge. Because of that, teachers and students believe that teacher’s questions are important. This research will help teachers analyze their types of questioning in the classroom. Hence, they can build more interaction and help students gain more understanding and critical thinking skills.
