Abstract Name : Haiza Shafira Student No : 1606102020016 Department/Program : English Education/Undergraduate Title : “An Analysis of Figurative Language in The Novel “Looking for Alaska“ By John Green” Keywords: Figurative, Novel, Meaning. Literature has long been fascinated by the researcher for its distinct style in delivering the significance of story. Whether in the traditional forms of the printed materials such as novel, myths, or legend to the newer and fresher forms of audiovisual like movie, literature has put interest and births some great research. A novel entitled Looking for Alaska is a subject for this qualitative descriptive-based research which by the researcher is analyzed to extract every figure of speeches (figurative languages) found in its writings. The theory behind the furative languages used by the researcher is keraf (2009). The results have shown that 67 figurative languages from four different categories are found in the novel. The category is consisted of hyperbole, simile, metaphor, and personification. The most frequently used of these four is simile with a total 27 finding while the least frequent is hyperbole with only 8 finding. This study also looks at the contextual meaning of those figurative languages which sometimes like metaphor could alter the meaning by its adjoining words.
