<note>Abstract
Name : Senja Prihatin
Student No. : 0806102020058
Study Program : English Education
Title : The Use of Authentic Materials in Teaching of Reading
for EFL Students
Keywords: Authentic Materials, Teaching Reading, EFL Students.
Reading comprehension is one of receptive skills that must be mastered by EFL
students. However, it is found that many students (especially, Indonesian) cannot
accomplish the expectation as they have no interest in reading. It is assumed that
this happens due to the uninteresting materials used by the teacher in the learning
process. To overcome the problem, authentic materials are recommended since it
is believed they can raise students’ enthusiasm because of their attractiveness in
presenting up-to-date information which suits their interest and exposing real
language. For that reason, the writer carried out a library research regarding the
issue by collecting all related experts’ view and finding and explored them to have
a conclusion. From all those theories and findings, it is found that through their
ability to expose what is happening in real life with genuine language in attractive
form (recipe, university catalogues, advertisements, etc.) , authentic materials can
truly magnetize students’ interest and improve their reading comprehension since
the materials focus the students’ attention on the content. Hence, it is very helpful
to use the materials in teaching reading. All in all, authentic materials are a
solution for reading problem since they have all features to bear the
comprehension.</note>
