Title      : The Use of STAD Technique in Improving Reading&#13;

This study was conducted at SMPN 12 Banda Aceh.  The purpose was to find out &#13;
whether the implementation of STAD technique  by the English teacher of the school &#13;
in teaching reading was  based on the procedures by Shaban and  Ghaith (2005) and to &#13;
figure out the teacher’s  stance  on the use of STAD. Descriptive qualitative was  used &#13;
in this study and the subject was an English teacher.  Moreover, the instruments  used &#13;
in this study were observation sheet and  interview questions. Based on  the &#13;
observation, i t was found that the teacher  did not implement  one  procedure of STAD &#13;
as suggested by Shaaban and Ghaith (2005)  and five  procedures  with  few &#13;
modifications. The procedure which was not implemented by the teacher was assigns&#13;
a role for each member of the groups and the five  procedures with  few modifications&#13;
were  related  to  quiz gave to the students;  providing printed  answer key;  ways  to &#13;
correct the student’s quiz;  provide team recognition form;  and  ways  to recognize the &#13;
achievement of the students.  They were not implemented and were modified due to &#13;
the situation and context of the teaching environment.  Furthermore, the teacher’s &#13;
stance  on the use of STAD were  because it gave  opportunities for the students to be &#13;
more active, motivated, and help each other in group work.</note>
