Abstract

Computer plays an essential role in society, especially for students. However, prolonged use of computers, improper ergonomics practices, and insufficient lighting may impact students’ eye health and cause Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). This study aimed to identify the risk factors and symptoms of CVS among students of the Faculty of Nursing of Universitas Syiah. This study was a descriptive study with univariate analysis and a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted on active undergraduate students. There were 227 students chosen as research respondents through the purposive sampling technique. All of the respondents were students without visual aids. The instrument used in the data collection was the CVS Risk Factor questionnaire. The questionnaire had been examined for the content validity index test with a value of 0.78 and a CVS-Q standard questionnaire. Overall, the results showed that CVS risk factors among students were in a low category. However, based on the results, the majority of students, or as many as 99 respondents (43.6%), who were in the high-risk category, were in monitor and room lighting sub-variables. Meanwhile, 190 respondents (83.7%) experienced CVS symptoms. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students of the Faculty of Nursing experienced a high incidence of CVS symptoms even though their CVS risk factors were in the low-risk category. Therefore, educational institutions are expected to pay more attention by providing various educational strategies to raise students’ awareness and behavior in preventing CVS.
