This study is entitled "teaching expository writing by using picture series (an experimental study at sma negeri 5 banda aceh)". the purpose of this study is to find out whether the students who are taught by using picture series improve their writing. the method used in this study was experiment quantitative research. the population of this study was all of the second year students at sma negeri 5 banda aceh in 20i0/2011 and the sample was one class consisted of 25 students as an experimental group. the sample of this study was chosen by using random sampling.the test was used for the instrument. there were two tests; pretest and post-test. the result of the test found that there was significant different of the students' ability in writing expository text. to prove the hypothesis, the writer used t-score formula, based on the data analysis the t-score is 2.27, meanwhile t- table is 2.06. it means that the obtained t-score is higher than t-table, therefore the alternative hypotheses (ha) is accepted and the null hypotheses (ho) is rejected. the writer concludes that teaching expository writing by using picture series can improve the students' ability in the rating scale of writing; organization, logical development of idea, grammar, mechanic, style and quality of expression.
