Contextual teaching and learning (ctl) is one of teaching methods which aims to use language as a communication tool for its user. contextual teaching and learning (ctl) is use to encourage students ability in speaking skill. the objective of this study is to look at some given theories and/or research findings on the use of contextual teaching and learning for teaching speaking skill. the discussion of approach is focused on particular components in contextual teaching and learning namely: constructivism. inquiry, questioning, learning community. modeling, reflection and authentic assessment. the characteristics in contextual teaching and learning (ctl) namely: making meaningful connections. doing significant work, self-regulated learning, collaborating, critical and creative thinking, nurturing the individual, reaching high standards, and using authentic assessment. the method of this study is library research. the data collected in the form of statement and/or theories suggested by the specialist particularly those theories related to the contextual teaching and learning in speaking skill. based on the research findings and experts' statements, it is found that contextual teaching and learning is effective to enhance the students' speaking skill. this study is expected to be useful for other english teachers.
