Proverb is a phrase or a sentence that expresses general truth, contains a moral lesson and is used as a piece of advice. the aim of this study is to ensure whether the gayonese still use proverbs in their daily life. this study also discusses the situations in which they are used in the society. this study belongs to a descriptive research. the population of this study was all of the gayonese who speak bahasa gayo. meanwhile, the sample was the persons who know the gayonese culture especially bahasa gayo. the samples were chosen by using the purposive sampling technique. to get the data, unstructured-focused interviews were used. there are six usages of proverbs in bahasa gayo: in expressing life philosophy, in giving daily advice, in traditional speech during marriage ceremonies, in songs, in making allusion, and in expressing character or state of people and things. key words : bahasa gayo, proverb, usage, society
