This study is focused on the difficulties faced by the third year students in reading section of national examination which are related to the reading comprehension question types. the purpose of the study is to find out the difficulties faced by the third year students of sma negeri 2 banda aceh in reading section of the national examination. the population of this study is the third year students of sma negeri 2 banda aceh. there are eight classes at the third year in which five classes as natural science class and three classes as social science class. as the sample, the writer took four classes namely, 3wl, 3w3, 31s/j and 31s/3. the total numbers of the sample were 74 students. the method applied in this study was descriptive quantitative. a test was used as the instrument. the test consisted of 35 question items divided into 5 type of reading comprehension questions. they were main idea questions, detail questions, implied meaning questions, purpose questions and vocabulary questions. index of difficulty and percentage were used to analyze the data. the result of the test showed that the third year students of sma negeri 2 banda aceh found difficulties in answering reading section test of the national examination. the students' difficulties are in answering implied meaning questions with a _percentage of 57.20%, purpose questions with a percentage of 75.00% and vocabulary questions with a _percentage 60.00%.
