This study is aimed at revealing the difference in the ability of speaking after application of the direct method to junior high school students at smp negeri 15, banda aceh. the study employs experimental study design. the hypotheses of this study are (1) the application of direct method cannot improve speaking ability in smp negeri 15 banda aceh (ho) and (2) the application of direct method can improve speaking ability of the students (ha). the data was analyzed by using descriptive quantitative technique and t-formula. the research population the students of smp negeri i5 banda aceh. the samples of this study were the 1" year students. total of the sample was 38 students. the data of test were analyzed by using t-formula to find out the t-score. the result of the study proved that t-score is 1.99 and the critical value oft-score is 1.68. the critical value oft-score is defined based on 36 degree of freedom on the level of significant 0.05. because oft-score is higher than the critical value oft-score, alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. it is clearly shown that the application of direct method can improve students' speaking skill. it is indicated by the analysis of result from the test of some indications (aspects) involved in speaking, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and fluency average score between those experimental class and control class.
