Abstract name : nurul haliza ulfia student number : 1406102020044 study program : english education title : an analysis of politeness strategies in the acehnese movie series eumpang breueh keywords: politeness strategies, eumpang breueh movie this research deals with the analysis of politeness strategies on joni’s dialogue in eumpang breueh movie. the objectives of the study were to find types of politeness, the most dominant strategy used by main character in the movie, and also to figure out the analysis of context for every scene where politeness strategies are used. this research was carried out using descriptive qualitative design. the sources of data were derived from the joni’s utterance in the movie. the data were analyzed based on brown and levinson’s theory. they classified politeness strategies into four types namely; bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. from the study, the writer only found three types of politeness strategies; they are positive politeness, bald on record, and negative politeness. the writer found 20 of positive politeness strategies, and 11 bald on record strategies and 1 negative politeness. the most dominant strategy was positive politeness strategy. joni used this strategy a lot because he wanted to be polite when he speaks with other people. the factors that influence the use of the strategies are associated with sociological variables such as social distance, relative power, and rank imposition.
