Name : mariana melia hrp student number : 0606102020029 major of study : 0606102020029 title : teaching writing through graphic organizer. this thesis is under the title "teaching writing through graphic organizer". graphic organizer is as one of the teaching media can help the students in solving their problem in writing text; as the visual display that is used to depict the relationships betweens facts, terms and/or ideas within a learning task and it can make a curriculum more supportive for students and teachers as it allows them to actually see rather than have to imagine the possibilities contained within. this study is aimed to find out whether the using of graphic organizer can improve students'performance in writing or not. to obtain the data for this study, the writer conducted an experimental study at sman 12 banda aceh. the second grade students were taken as the subject of this study. the writer took two classes purposively from 7 classes and took the whole class as the sample of this research (32 from xl ia 3 and 3l from xi ia 4). the students' achievement or performance was scored by using pretest and posttest. pretest was conducted before the experiment in order to know the students' score in both groups before the treatment. on the contrary, posttest is to know the students' achievement after the treatment. to find the result of this study, the writer used t-score. the result of the posttest showed that the mean score of the experimental group is 66,45 and the control group is 45. 7 and the result of t-score is 3,26. the critical value oft-table at the level significant 0,05 is 2,02 and at the level of significant 0,01 is 2,71 with the degree of freedom 38. since, the result of t-test is higher than t-table, the alternative hypothesis is accepted. it means that the using of graphic organizer in this study can improve the students' performance in writing narrative text. moreover, graphic organizer was a better teaching media/aid than a conventional media in improving the second grade students' performance at sma 12 banda aceh in writing narrative text.
