Abstract name : dahlia student no. : 0806102020084 study program : english language education title : the impact of three-step interview technique on speaking ability (an experimental study at the second year students of smpn 8 darussalam) keywords: three-step interview technique, speaking ability, experimental study. this research aims at finding out how three-step interview gives impact on students’ speaking ability. three-step interview technique is a technique of teaching speaking that can overcome speaking difficulties. for that reason, the writer conducted an experimental research and she took 20 students of the second grade of smpn 8 darussalam as sample. the result demonstrates that three-step interview technique is truly gives impact on students’ speaking ability. the impact revealed in the posttest score covering all speaking aspects displayed in the following details; grammar pre: 2.3, post: 2.85, vocabulary pre: 2.3 post: 2.85, pronunciation pre: 2.2 post: 2.6, comprehension pre: 2.65 post: 3.1, fluency pre: 2.15 post: 3.1. briefly, from first to last activity of this study, it was clear that three-step interview succeeds in overcoming the students’ problems since it promotes active learning. the details showed that fluency aspect is the highest improvement score, (0.95). meanwhile the lowest aspect is pronunciation score, (0.4). therefore, the researcher recommends that the readers can find out other techniques and carry out a further research on the technique which improves all aspects of speaking. in conclusion, three-step interview is good at enhancing grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency, but is not good enough to develop pronunciation aspect.
