Abstract flood is a natural or man-made disaster, which has caused a lot of destruction to the society such as death, properties and landscape in global context. in the gambia context, the topography is among the factors that causes the occurrences of flood in the country. the landscape country is generally low-lying with nowhere in the gambia above 60 meters. flood risk management in the gambia is a shared responsibility between government and local government agencies with a complex set of programs and authorities. nationally, both the national disaster management agency (ndma) and the national environment agency (nea) have programs to assist states and communities in reducing flood damages and promoting sound flood risk management. the data was collected through interviews and questionnaire as a source of primary data. reviewed materials from journal papers, research, articles and documented reports by the gambia national disaster management agency on disaster risk reduction also serve as the secondary data. the method of the study had employed descriptive approach. swot analysis and likert scale were used for the data analysis, with the aim to assess the current level of effectiveness and management capacity of flood risk reduction in the gambia. the results of the study have shown that, the level of effectiveness in the flood risk management capacity in relation to drm phases needs a better improvement. keywords: disaster, management, flooding, floodplains, environment.
