Abstract name : ranti maulya student no. : 1409200080030 study program : magister degree in english education department : english education title : a language analysis of a textbook entitled “my pals are here! mathematics” for elementary students (a language instructions analysis within “my pals are here!” mathematics textbook for year iii students) keywords: language instructions, language analysis, mathematics textbook this research investigated the language instruction implied in the mathematics textbook entitled “my pals are here! mathematics” textbook. a qualitative method was implemented in this research to analyze the textbook in terms of three metafunctions (ideational, interpersonal and textual functions) and language considerations. the data source of this research was the language instruction of mathematics textbook for elementary school students entitled “my pals are here! mathematics”. the instrument used for collecting data was from various checklists. the data were analyzed by using the frameworks proposed by halliday (2014) and morgan (2002) to analyze the language instruction and by o’keeffe and o’donogue (2014) to investigate the dominant language considerations. there were four textbook layouts in the textbook; bubble speeches, tasks, explanations, and texts. regarding the ideational function, it showed that the dominant process in the textbook was material, mental and relational. in terms of interpersonal function, the textbook writers inserted the aspect of authority and ownership in order to depict the participants in all layouts of the book. moreover, on the regard of textual function, the layouts of the textbook were in accordance with the theory of halliday. meanwhile, related to the language considerations, the grammatical rules and lexical items of english appeared in the textbook.
