Abstract name : said miftahul fahmi student no. : 1506102020061 department/program : english education/undergraduate title : “an analysis of violated maxims in rudy habibie movie” keywords: maxims, movie, meaning. this thesis presents violation of maxim by rudy habibie, rudy’s father, illona, keng kie, poltak, and ayu in rudy habibie movie. furthermore, the researcher has two-research problem. those are, what types of maxim are violated in the conversation in “rudy habibie” movie and what are the objectives of maxim of violating in “rudy habibie” movie. based on the explanation above, this research focuses on the violation of maxim used in rudy habibie movie and the objective of the violation in rudy habibie movie. the researcher uses the cooperative principle theory by grice (1975) to analyze the types of violation maxim. furthermore, the researcher uses the theory from christoffersen (2005), dornerus (2005), and grice (1975) to analyze the reason behind the violation. for the sake of this thesis, the researcher uses qualitative methods. the findings of this research are the violation of maxim of quantity (21), maxim of quality (10), maxim of relevance (5), maxim of manner (4). furthermore, the reasons behind the utterance are building one’s belief (11), convince the hearer (9), create humor (7), discourage the hearer (6), hide the truth (2), save face (1), jealous (1), and satisfy the hearer (1). ?
