Abstract name : elijar handayani student no. : 1106102110064 study program : english education title : improving reading skill by using numbered head together ( a classroom action research at grade 2, semester 1, smpn 1 singkil utara ) keywords : reading skill, numbered head together this study aimed at improving students reading skill through numbered head together and having student take a part actively in reading text by expressing ideas, thoughts and opinion. the technique was used in this classroom action research is numbered head together. the subject of this study is second grade students of smpn 1 singkil utara and the objects of this study are reading skill and numbered head together. the result of this study are the use of numbered head together in the teaching learning process has some benefits for the students. students’ motivation in learning english increased and they actively took a part in learning activity. it is proven from the result of students questionnaire and observation sheet that shows most of students are interested and motivated in learning english by using numbered head together. the use of numbered head together benefits students in improving their reading ability to response the meaning of descriptive text. it was marked through the improvement of students learning thoroughness in both cycle i (56,94) and cycle ii (75,18). therefore, the writer suggests that to apply the numbered head together in teaching learning requires good preparation, so the teacher should be able to select an appropriate topic to be taught by using nht technique. the teacher should inform students in advance about the way of numbered head together implemented in the classroom. it is important as it will determine the process of learning.
