Abstract name : cut irda lizma student no. : 1306102020040 study program : english education department title : “the effects of motivation of sma negeri 1 banda aceh students in learning english”. keywords: motivation, language, learning this research is aimed at investigating the motivation of the students of sman 1 banda aceh in learning the english language. this study was conducted using qualitative method by using questionnaire as the instrument for collecting data. the population for this study was the whole twelfth grade students at the sman 1 banda aceh, consisted of five classes, however, the researcher merely took the students who enrolled in xii-ipa 2 and xii-ipa 5 as the samples for this study. the total number of students who participated as the sample of this study was 55 students. the results of the research indicated that the types of motivations that motivated the students of sman i banda aceh in learning english were intrinsic motivation, extrinsic/instrumental motivation, and integrative motivation. among these three motivations, the most dominant type of motivation that influenced the students was the integrative motivation, that was a combination of the three types of motivations. it can be concluded that the students at sman i banda aceh were highly motivated to learn english due to reasons that the researcher had studied and concluded in this study.
