Ihsan, THE USE OF PARTICIPATION POINT SYSTEM IN DEVELOPING ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS (AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF FIRST YEAR NON-ENGLISH STUDENTS OF CONVERSATION CLASS AT UIN AR-RANIRY BANDA ACEH IN 2016/2017 ACADEMIC YEAR). The objectives of this research are to investigate if there is a significant difference achievement between students who are taught by using participation point system technique and those who are taught by using non-pps technique on their speaking skill at uin ar-raniry banda aceh. it was also aimed at finding out the students’ response toward the use of pps in learning speaking in conversation class at uin ar-raniry banda aceh. the participants of this research were the first year non-english students of conversation class at uin ar-raniry banda aceh in 2016/2017 academic year. this research used the quantitative method with pre-test and post-test design under the quasi-experimental design. therefore, the participants of this study were not selected randomly. the participants of this research were 30 students of first year non-english students of conversation class at uin ar-raniry banda aceh. the data were collected through test and questionnaire. the collected data from pre-test and post-test were analyzed through a quantitative procedure using the statistical formula to find out the result from the experimental and control group. the researcher identified the data from the students about introducing yourself, introducing people, asking and giving information, simple questions, and asking and giving directions from both pre-test and post-test. furthermore, the result of the questionnaire from the experimental group was analyzed based on the percentage of students’ response. the findings of the research show that the pps can improve the students’ speaking skills in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and expression. pps is a technique to motivate students' participation in the classroom, especially communicative participation by giving the students something real. the technique encourages the students to participate in the classroom situation by asking and answering questions, expressing opinions and volunteering for classroom activities. it also creates a better teaching-learning atmosphere in the classroom situation.
