Abstract verawaty2015.improving students’ speaking skill through numbered head together technique.(a classroom action research at second grade of sman 1 ungguldarulimarah).thesis, graduate english education of program in english language education, syiah kuala university. advisors: (1) dr.sofyan a. gani, m.a.(2) abdul manan, m.sc., m.a., ph.d. key words: speaking, numbered head together (nht) technique this research was conducted to know how numbered head together (nht) technique is implemented in improving students’ speaking skill, and knowingthe students’ responses toward the implementation of nht technique in teaching speaking. this research was a classroom action research (car) and was done in 2 cycles. the procedure of the research consists of planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflection. the instruments used in collecting the data were the test, observation sheet for the researcher and the students, and questionnaire. the result of the research showed that nht technique gave better result in improving the students’ speaking skill in sharing information and delivering ideas. it can be seen in the result of the previous test, in that the mean score is 60.4 before the action and it increased to be 67 at the end of cycle 1 and 82.2 at the end of cycle 2. furthermore, the percentage of students’ participation in the teaching and learning process increases gradually. this is proved by the result of the observation sheet where the percentage of the students’ involvement is 67% (enough criteria) in the first cycle and increases to be 98.43% (very good criteria) in the second cycle. it means that they work well in running all the activities. furthermore, based on the result of questionnaire given, the mean score obtained by the students is 3.01 (agree). it showed that the students responded positively toward the implementation of the actions. thus, based on findings, it is suggested that other researchers and teachers who have problems in teaching speaking try to implement this technique. besides, it might help to overcome the problems encountered by teachers and to make students more active and participate in the process of learning by expanding their knowledge, knowing their needs and interest in activating their background knowledge.
