Abstract name : shindy khusuma dwitami student no. : 1106102020022 study program : english education title : an analysis of students speaking anxiety (a quantitative study at the eighth grade students in smpn 1 banda aceh) keywords: speaking, anxiety anxiety is one of speaking problems experienced by students in smpn 1 banda aceh. based on the writer' observation while having internship from january to june 2016 in smpn 1 banda aceh, many students feel anxiety in speaking. therefore the writer was interested to conduct the research with the title above. the objective of this research is to find out the level of english speaking anxiety experienced by students at smpn 1 banda aceh. the scope of study is limited to find out the level of speaking anxiety by the eighth grade students at class viii-4 in smpn 1 banda aceh. the quantitative method was used in this research to find the answer of the research questions. based on the data analysis, the writer found that from 29 students in class viii-4, it is only 38% students experienced low level anxiety, 59% experienced moderate levels of speaking anxiety while 3,4% of them experienced high levels of anxiety. so, it can be concluded that most students experienced moderate level of speaking anxiety. hence, this research result can give information for the teachers or readers about the level of students' anxiety. thus, the writer suggests that teachers should find an alternative strategy to reduce the students speaking anxiety.
