The aim of this study is to find out how the teacher implements the authentic material in teaching reading at smpn 1 baitussalam and to see the characteristics of the materials used by the english teacher. the subjects of this study are an english teacher and students of first grade of smpn 1 baitussalam. in order to find out how the english teacher implemented the authentic material in teaching reading, this study uses descriptive qualitative research by using purposive sampling technique. the data were taken from observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. the collected data were analyzed into narrative form, while the data questionnaire was analyzed by using the formula given by sudijono (2005, p. 46). the result shows that the english teacher had implemented the authentic material through group work. moreover, the materials that had used by the english teacher can be characterized as the authentic material.
